The Ayuda Project
Marie Blistan, Sue Clark (coordinator of the AYUDA project) from Mantua schools, and the president of the teachers' association from the Dominican Republic. We met and spoke with this lady at the RA Convention. The Ayuda Project gathered school supplies for the children in the Dominican Republic. In fact, Sue Clark and her two colleagues, Wendy Baker and Suzie Granato-Castro from Mantua Public Schools spearheaded, organized and made a personal trip to the island to deliver the goods. The project is still on-going. The three won the New Jersey Education Human Rights Award this past school year for their untiring efforts. yuda Project photo

Deptford Education Association Members Roll Up Their Sleeves for Habitat for Humanity

Deptford Education Association members gave up a Saturday morning to work with Habitat for Humanity. They fixed up a building in Pitman which is going to be used to sell items (similar to the Goodwill stores) to help raise funds for Habitat for Humanity.

10/25/07 - Governor Corzine Honors Washington Twp High School Students & Staff

Governor Corzine Visits
Marie Blistan, special education teacher at Washington Township High School, Lisa Moore, classroom assistant to Marie, and Ann Hill, Media Specialist (librarian) along with Marie and and Lisa’s last year 10th grade students were honored by Governor Jon Corzine at a special press conference on October 25, 2007.  The event was hosted by the New Jersey Hall of Fame Board of Commissioners where Marie, Lisa, and Ann were recognized for their school wide ‘voting’ project that they devised and implemented for the Hall of Fame voting last spring.  The project fits the criteria of a Best Practice, and the Commission is working with Marie to disseminate the plan throughout the state as a model for  K-12 educators to use.  The Commission also unveiled the first set of winners who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in May, 2008.  The New Jersey Hall of Fame building plans are underway, and their website will keep New Jersey residents up to date with the progress as well as listing this year’s winners (www.njhalloffame.com).  Also on hand to congratulate the staff and students of Washington Township were Joyce Powell, President of NJEA, and Barbara Keshishian, Vice President of NJEA.

GCEA declared Friday, October 26, 2007 as
"Pink Day" to benefit breast cancer research.

Our county members participated in this worthy event by wearing pink and participating in fundraising activities for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Congratulations Deptford Education Association.
Over $15,000 was raised to help find a cure!

We ended our Breast Cancer Awareness month last Friday. The majority of the awareness was every Wednesday in the month. Students/teachers wore pink.  We had two jeans days that went toward Susan G Komen, and sold ribbons to students for fundraisers. Our total $$$ raised with these fundraisers was $1600.00.  The freshman sophomore cafeteria won the ribbon buying competition, and received pink tickets in homeroom to get their free pink/white ice cream at lunch.

Our first annual pink day at Woodbury Jr. Sr. HS  was very successful…we only had 1 ½ weeks to prepare.  We sold beads (from you) and pink necklaces and bracelets and boas and hats (from the dollar store).  Foxfire Associates at 39 S. Broad St. donated 50-60 jewelry items to sell – they were beautiful and a favorite to buy!  We collected $241.00!  Plus the faculty and staff members had a jeans day which collected $307.00.  So our total for Susan G. Komen was $548.00.  (also a special note: Ms. Baresel did the 3 day walk for Komen this month and  collected $2,300!)  I was thrilled that about 80% of the students and staff wore pink and many donated without purchasing pink items!!  Our students stepped up and were so great!!  We can’t wait for next year!

CONGRATULATIONS DEPTFORD!

Three South Jersey districts receive grants from Center for Teaching and Learning

The Trustees of the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning have awarded annual grants of $25,000 each to Lawrence Township, Egg Harbor City and Deptford Township to create collaborative professional learning communities (PLC) of middle school mathematics educators. The goal of the program is for the collaborative professional learning communities to address student achievement gaps in mathematics and to incorporate Algebra I in the middle school curriculum so that all students in the three schools demonstrate proficiency in Algebra I by eighth-grade graduation. The renewable grant will last three years.
